DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS CONFERENCE AND SUBSEQUENT WITHDRAWAL OF GRP-1 The Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Charlene Zettel, and three of her staff, met with eight representatives of CCGO and other geoscience organizations from all over California (including AWG, AEG, and GRA) on Valentine's Day in Sacramento. The meeting was suggested by Director Zettel in order to bring up topics of concern to both parties regarding the California Performance Review, as well as the Governor's Reorganization Plan. Jason Preece, CCGO President, spoke eloquently in favor of keeping the BGG in its current state, bringing up several lines of reasoning to further CCGO's position.

As a result of a number of meetings and letters regarding the Governor's Reorganization Plan, Governor Schwarzenegger wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Little Hoover Commission, concluding that it will benefit from further review. We applaud the Governor's wisdom in recognizing that this plan was not well-thought out, and thank him for his courage in publicly recognizing this.

LETTER TO OUR LEGISLATORS IN SUPPORT OF THE BGG CCGO sent out letters to members of our legislature in January offering our support for keeping the Board of Registration for Geologists and Geophysicists (BGG) intact and functioning in its primary objective, which is protecting the health and safety of the people of California by maintaining high standards in the geosciences professions.

PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST vs REGISTERED GEOLOGIST With Governor Schwarzenegger's signature on SB 1914 in the Fall of 2004, all Registered Geologists will now be identified as “Professional Geologists ", effective Jan 1, 2005.  This name change brings California licenses in line with other states that license Geologists. Your wall certificate and pocket licenses are still effective.  Based on the Geologist and Geophysicist Act, the professional geologist and certified specilty geologist seals will need to be updated with the term "Professional Geologist".

INCREASE IN GEOLOGIST LICENSING FEES In addition,  with the passage of Senate Bill 363 (Figueroa) and the promulgation of regulations to implement the statute, the Board for Geologists and Geophysicists (Board) is authorized to increase its licensing fees. Effective January 1, 2005, the biannual fee for Certified Engineering Geologist and Certified Hydrogeologist is being increased from $50 to $100, and the fee for Registered Geologist and Registered Geophysicist is being increased from $200 to $400. This increase will allow the Board to recover its costs incurred in issuing licenses, and maintain the services and programs it provides to the consumer and licensed community.
